Letter Quest now available on Amazon Appstore for Android!

As many of you are well aware, we’ve been having quite a bit of problems with bringing Letter Quest out worldwide on Google Play. The trouble is how Google handles taxes on app sales…or rather, how they don’t really handle them at all! They forward the tax on to us, and then we’re responsible for squaring things up with every single country’s tax authority at year end, which is a nightmare! Recently we started looking into Amazon Apps. Turns out they handle taxes in a much more straight-forward way: they collect the income, taxes, etc. from sales and handle it all internally, and then send us money as US income. This is much easier for us to deal with, because all we need to do is fill out a W-8BEN, which stops Amazon from having to send 30% of everything we make to the IRS. We provide them with our EIN, and that’s it, good to go! We do have to settle up with the IRS once a year for our year-end, but that’s pretty minor (and why we have an accountant!). Now that we got that out of the way…the great news: Letter Quest is now available worldwide on the Amazon Appstore. So for all of the Android players that have been wanting the game, now you can download it through Amazon Appstore! The game is $2.99 on Amazon Apps, and has no ads and no IAP (in-app purchases). It includes the in-app purchasable content (second character, all weapons, all custom letter tiles) from the App Store/Google Play version. We hope that everyone can now finally get a chance to play Letter Quest! Please help us out by spreading the word, and if you have a spare moment after purchasing the game, consider leaving a review. Apple’s new Advertising Identifier Usage and App Updating

We recently released a huge update for Letter Quest, and when we went to submit it to Apple, we were presented with some new popup asking all kinds of questions about an advertising ID, whether or not we were using it, and how we were using it. I read up on it and figured out how to answer everything, and submitted the update like usual. A week later, the update was rejected. The reason given was that we were using the advertiser ID in our app, but didn’t have any ads. Strange, I could swear that we added AdMob banner ads and Vungle video ads in the most recent update. A quick test in the app and yes, both of those ad types are actually in there (until you buy something in the game, then they’re removed). So what gives? Turns out that Apple reviewers probably don’t spend a lot of time testing each app update they receive, which makes sense given the volume they must deal with. However, the ads in Letter Quest are quite easy to find. So I assumed that our app actually was okay, and should be approved, so I entered an appeal to the rejection. Basically I explained in painstaking detail how to find the banner and Vungle ads, how to trigger them, when they show up and under what conditions, etc. Two days later and the update was approved with no changes on our part. So what should you take away from this? If you use ads in your app (iAd doesn’t count for this purpose), then make sure to include very detailed instructions about how to view/access them, how/when they show up, and what type of ads you have in your app in the review notes when you submit your app or app update. All told this silliness caused us to have an app that finally became available on a Monday afternoon instead of Friday evening, which is brutal, considering we tend to see our highest revenue on weekends. Disappointing, but at least it should never happen again – I’ll be giving tons of info with every app review in the notes from now...

Letter Quest v2.0.4

This is the biggest update for Letter Quest that we’ve ever done! It’s like a whole new game, and we’re so excited to share this update with everyone finally! It was delayed due to one of the bandits having to move, being hospitalized due to a severe allergic reaction to some antibiotics, and a bunch of other crazy stuff. But the bandits can’t be stopped that easily! 🙂 So, without further ado, here’s what’s new (I promise no more rhymes…probably!). Introducing Rose! We wanted to add another character to the game for some time, so that Grimm would have some company. We decided to create a female character, and once we settled on making her outfit red, we felt that Rose was a fitting name. We actually went through several name changes, but eventually settled on one that was easy to pronounce, just one syllable (like Grimm), and just felt right. So here’s Rose, now fully playable in the game: Completely new UI One of the things we were never really happy with was the UI (user interface – windows, buttons, etc.) in the initial release of Letter Quest. Now that the game has been out for a while, we’ve been able to spend some time really polishing up the UI and making it look like we always wanted it to. We’re really happy with how it turned out, and we’ve had some really great feedback on it so far! Crystal Stars! Something that we keep getting requests for is more difficult stages. We decided that it would be fun to add a fourth star to every stage (so 40 new stars!), call them crystal stars, and make them extra difficult. The way these challenges work is: every enemy now has a “Level”, which determines how difficult they are, and every single enemy has a unique weakness or strength now. Some examples are: “only takes damage from words containing 3 or more corner letters”, or “takes no damage from words containing the letter ‘E'”, etc. New weapon, and Upgradeable Weapons! Rose has her own weapon, it has a sharpened candy cane blade and a pretzel stick staff. It provides a bonus to max health, and can also be used by Grimm. All weapons in the game can be used by either character so there’s tons of ways to play! Every weapon in the game can now be upgraded multiple times, which enhances the bonus it provides! Character Shop And of course, we now have a character shop so that you can select your favorite character! New Letter Tiles We also added one more set of letter tiles, with a sort-of futuristic looking font. We’re now up to six sets of letter tiles, so you can choose a look that you like! Word Stats Many people asked for some word stats to be tracked, for their best words. So we added three new word stat tracking sections, each one tracking your top 10 words. Character Details Popup Several players wanted to know more details about their character. So now you can click your character’s portrait during battle (the one near their health bar in the top-left) and bring up a character details popup. You can also bring this up from the character shop by clicking the DETAILS button, and on that one you can easily switch between characters to compare stats. Better Dictionary We’re continually improving the game’s dictionary. We’re now at over 180,000 words that are recognized. In this update we added over 250 more words, including tons of country names, the names of the planets, and much more!...

Word Definitions in Desktop Version!

It’s been a while since I’ve posted! I’ve been incredibly busy working on the desktop version of Letter Quest! I’m excited to announce that I’ve managed to get the definitions of about 150,000 of our 180,000 words into the game! This is a feature that we’ve wanted to add since the beginning, and it really takes the game from just a fun word game, to one that can actually teach you a little bit as you play! As you can see in the screenshots (which include some VERY placeholder UI, it will be much prettier soon, we promise!), the last word that you spelled will be shown along with its definition in the panel at the bottom-left. Also, as you spell words, if a valid word is spelled, there will be a little question mark button you can push that will instantly bring up the definition of the word you’re currently spelling. We’re trying very hard to see if it’s possible to cram all of this information into the mobile version, but for now this is a desktop-only feature. We’re doing everything we can to make it work on mobile too, but it’s a challenging problem to figure out! As usual, the bandits will try to work their bacon-infused magic to make it happen! 🙂 Here’s some screenshots showing off this sweet feature! If you like what you see, consider voting for Letter Quest on Steam Greenlight, it would really help us out! Have a great weekend...
